Pro-Confederate Texas and Pro-Union Utah were important at this point, although California rapidly became the main western power.[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Utahns moved west into Nevada and Northern California, whereas Texans moved into New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Parts of New Mexico and Arizona were briefly a Confederate territory, then were transformed into a Union territory, then Union state. Arizona's original government and military were similar to thoseTexas at the time had. Arizona, in the form of the Gadsden Purchase also has connections to the Republic of Sonora. The Southwestern states take up roughly one third of the United States.
There were a very large population of Native American tribes in the southwestern states, as well as all of America. Some of the larger and more popular tribes of Native Americans in the southwest were the Ute, Navajo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Apache, Comanche, Paiute, Hopi, and theAnasazi. The Ute formally ruled over most of modern day Utah and Colorado, as well as small parts of northern New Mexico. The Navajo had ruled over much of Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Utah at one point as well. Apache tribes had once ruled over many lands in the southwest. Such as, most of New Mexico,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eastern Arizona, and parts of southwest Texas. The Jicarilla tribe of Apache also ruled well into southern and southeastern Colorado as well. The Comanche ruled many lands in the southwest as well. Their historic range consisted of present day eastern New Mexico, southern and southeastern Colorado, northeastern Arizona, and most all of west and northwest Texas. The Paiute people were another very large Nativer American civilization. They controlled most all of present day Nevada, western Utah, and northern Arizona. Some of the oldest evidence of Native Americans in the southwest are from the Hopi and the Anasazi people. The Hopi controlled most all of what is modern day Arizona at one point. On the other hand, the Anasazi (Ancient Pueblo peoples) controlled much of the southwest as well. Their ancient territory consisted of northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, southeastern Utah, and all of southern Colorado. Some of the more known evidence of the ancient pueblo peoples can be found at Chaco National Park in New Mexico, and Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. Also, small cacti does grow in Utah and Colorado. These examples (except the Saguaro Cactus), can be seen growing natively and in large numbers more east throughout the Texas Hill Country and South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. However, none of the vegetation discussed grows natively the further east than the eastern outskirts of San Antonio, Austin, and Fort Worth. Dallas and Houston, for example, share a smiliar terrain with states further east and are often considered to be more of the American South. In the far eastern parts of the southwest, Prairies and Grassland's are found all over. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] These prairies and grasslands are usually located in Eastern Colorado, Eastern New Mexico, and large areas in West Texas.Steppe is also located all over the high plains areas in Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. In the mountains of the southwestern states, most have large alpine trees that grow in the states as well. Aspen tree's also form all over the southwest, in the higher elevations in the mountains of each state, except for Texas.

explore students' experiences with reading alternative texts, I asked students to complete a questionnaire that assessed their reactions to self-selected forensics trade books drawn from the school [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] library, which was also a public library. Their books included forensic fiction, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] graphic novels, and forensic nonfiction. The questions focused on the nature of the book, their reasons for selecting it, their reactions to it, and a description of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the forensic content. My analysis of the responses showed that two thirds of the students (63%, including 79% of the boys) enjoyed reading their self-selected fiction or nonfiction forensics-related books. Students selected these books based on recommendations from friends or family members, by familiarity with the authors, by descriptions on the book jackets, or because the book was based on a popular TV program such as CSL. Most students (58%) reported that their book caused them to become more interested [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in forensics. For example, a girl who did not typically like to read, Gina, reported that she was reading To the Last Breath by Carlton Stowers, the nonfiction story of the murder of a young child. She remarked, "I haven't been able to put it book made me want to read more and more forensic-related books." Jane read Two Little Girls in Blue by [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Mary Higgins Clark. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] She described how as she read this fictional story of a brutal kidnapping she paid close attention to the descriptions of fingerprints and their recovery process by remembering the methods that she had learned in class. She read the book in two nights to find out what happened because she was intrigued by how the detectives found the murderers by using inductive reasoning. Mary read the fiction book Martyn Pig by Kevin Brooks, reporting that this book made her more interested in forensics because of the way the clues were presented as two people tried to frame a friend for murder. She said that this story inspired her to want to learn more about fiber analysis during the labs in class.
The students who enjoyed these books took pleasure in the ways in which the concepts in the books related to the forensic techniques and processes that they learned in class. They made comments such as the following:
"The book reinforced the concepts of blood samples and fingerprints."
"I remembered doing the crime scene investigation in class and I could therefore conclude things about the scene by what the author said."
"It [the book] made me think more about what scientists do when they arrive at a crime scene." "Now that I have a better understanding of forensics I am more interested [in reading forensics books]."
Those who did not enjoy their books remarked that the presentation of forensics in these texts was uninteresting and unexciting, particularly in comparison to other media texts. They made comments such as the following: IWC Replica Watches
"Crime scene investigations [in books] are not as action packed as the show CSI likes to show."
"The process of forensics seems incredibly tedious and dull."

"The book sort of bored the TV shows you can see the action happening and better understand the high tech machinery used along with documents and the lingo."
